Things to Do on Hawaii Island

We split Hawaii Island into six areas that match how most people travel it. Kona and the Kohala Coast cover the sunny west side, with snorkeling, resorts and historic sites. Hilo and the volcano area anchor the east, and Waimea, the Hamakua Coast and Kau fill in the ranch country, waterfalls and southern shoreline in between.

Book anything with limited space early: manta ray night snorkels, Kealakekua Bay tours, Maunakea sunset trips and guided volcano tours fill up, especially in winter and summer. If you plan to drive yourself to the national park or the summit of Maunakea, check current conditions the morning you go.
